King O absolutely adores playing with people and interacting. He is absolutely charming and has the cutest little voice that sounds a bit like Elmo from Sesame Street. He simply loves Wendy, the Vet Tech here at the Parrot Garden. Here is a video I shot of the two of them singing “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” O really gets in to the “Hurray!”

At Parrot Garden we do not collar birds for feather destructive behavior. Collars are extremely hard for a parrot to tolerate. They interfere with every part of their life: eating, perching, preening, climbing and playing. You might end up with a bird in perfect feather…but he will have NO quality of life. The only time we will resort to collars is if there is self-mutilation present. And only if vests are not enough. We have come to the conclusion that feathers, like hair, are optional. O is who he is. He likes the clean shaven look. He is a happy, confident bird, who has developed a habit of pulling out feathers. In a collar he wouldn’t have the same freedom.

I now understand that putting a collar on King O would decrease his auality of life, so, has anyone thought of making a doll-sized hoodie or cap for him to wear on his head and can still give King O the movement he needs? I was thinking of domething like the girls/women wore on the TV show “Little House on the Prairie” it could be loosely attached on his head, but not so that King O can easily remove it. Just a thought.

That should have said “quality of life” in the beginning.
