I’ve just discovered the joys of belonging to a young Congo African Grey , and while hunting for information about how to best care for my feathered friend properly found this blog and thank you so much for writing it! Today I made my first “chop”, and Paddywack loved it, I loved it, and the house taste tester aka my DH ate it like it was the first food he’d had in weeks. Thanks to you again, you’ll never know how much I appreciate some honest to God good advice with a sensible no-nonsense delivery.

Hi Patricia,
Have a question about freezing chop. When I defrost my chop it is very liquidy despite adding rice or beans. Can you suggest something I can do so it is not so liquidy?
Also was wondering if you could share the recipe for Maggie’s Manicotti? Looked really!
Thanks!

I’m new to Chop and trying to gather info. that I need. Freezing is one issue that I really need help with. I have a Sun Conure, so my chop will be used slowly. Questions:
How do you avoid the problem of frozen chop becoming runny when it’s defrosted?
Are there steps and procedure to freezing chop to avoid mushiness? If so, what are they?
I guess those are the same questions, just worded different.
Thanks

THANK YOU for all of the fantastic information. I just put my very first Grain Bake in the oven for Tsali (prounounced Saul-ee the “T” is silent) our 14 week old African Grey. He is our first bird and hubby and I are having so much fun with him. Finally, someone to cook for who loves to eat! Hubby eats to live, Tsali lives to eat!!!

Hi Patricia,
One quick question, do you serve the bean mix warm or cold? 🙂 I am about to make my batch of bean mix, but I am wondering how you serve it to the birds, temperature wise. Thank you so much 🙂

When I just make it, I serve it as it is when it’s mixed, but after that I serve it cold.

Great blog. I also feed my parrots a homemade food. However nothing as great looking as in your “who said pet food has to look like slop?” Post. I firmly believe homemade food is the way to go for these amazing creatures. Pellets just don’t seem to cut it.
