I recieved a phone call from Jacque Johnson at Best Friends on Sunday. I would like you to carefully consider sending just five or ten dollars to this fledgling rescue to help out these birds. It’s a horrible situation and they desperately need our help. Just giving up one Starbucks latte would make an enormous difference to these birds if we all do it. We did it before for the Alex Foundation. We can do it again for the Troy, Ohio birds. I don’t often ask for donations. I know how tough it is. But I “walked the walk” today and sent a hundred dollars to them. It’ll sting, but I don’t have the time to go up and help. Here is Jacque’s explanation of the situation in Troy:
***
“There is a dying man in Troy Ohio who had 130+ birds. He is an item hoarder, and his house has been condemned due to the filth and garbage. He had no power or water. So he moved in with his sister, leaving behind his birds in 105 degree weather. No food, other than piles of raw peanuts and no clean water. Many of the birds were just turned loose in the home. After much red tape and foot dragging, the small (and brand new) Miami Valley bird rescue was able to get permission to get into the house and feed/water birds and assess their condition. The humane society has given the man 2 weeks to clean things up before they will seize the birds. The ladies found dozens and dozens of dead birds. The remaining 80+ birds were all extremely stressed, hot and starving. Reports are that they actually lunged at the food they were so hungry. The ladies fed out more than 40 lbs of pellets. They will be going back every day to feed and water the birds. However, they don’t have the necessary funds to keep buying this amount of food. I shipped them off 2 50lb bags of pellets this morning and contacted Harrison’s and Lafabers for some donations. I paid the shipping on the nutriberries so they could go out today. They really need donations of either cash or food. I’ve found the easiest way to send food is to just call and order it and have it sent directly to the bird group. They will also need help placing these birds once they are relinquished. I have room at Best Friends for the greys, but there are dozens of macaws and some cockatoos needing placement. All in all, about 80 birds are going to need somewhere to land. They also need some experienced assistance. If anyone is up for a road trip, now would be a good time. If you can help at all, food, cash, money or time you can contact Kim Seitz, 937-440-0016 or 937-308-2509 . Donations can be sent to Miami Valley Bird Rescue, Attn Kim, 4445 E State RT 41, Troy, Ohio 45373. They also have a PayPal account set up at Kim’s email address: kseitz63@frontier.com If you would like more info, you can contact me at Best Friends: 435-644-2001 ext 4211. I should also have pictures by tomorrow, but my understanding is that they are probably too graphic to share….”

Patricia,
Such a sad situation, my heart goes out to the birds. I cannot imagine what the rescuers are enduring but know it must be just awful. I’m donating til it hurts…first of the month and all but it is only hurting my pocketbook. Am sure it hurts a lot worse emotionally for those involved.

Patricia, Thanks for giving us the info and confirmation on who to send our monetary donations to. I posted it to my FB page and asked the same as you for all parrot lovers to give up a cup and send it to her. These parrots are the same as ours and we’d give up the world for ours… so! I sent my $50 via Paypal a few minutes ago, a months worth of my tea at SB, well worth it!!

Just sent 20.00 directly to Kim. Being in PA, I can’t be on site to help.
Having worked in hospitals, I can attest to the fact that this horrible situation is a direct result of the incredible neglect of mental health issues this country is so guilty of.
Godspeed to those who will work so hard to save those poor birds.

I just email the mayor, please do the same. Only takes a minute and maybe someone in the office will take action to get things moving. There is NO excuse for those birds to still be suffering. They were discovered several days ago and they are still suffering? What is the major malfunction that so many people want to help but aren’t allowed?? What exactly is needed to let the rescue groups in?
Maybe the rescue group should just go in and take the birds now, pay a fine later. Or make the owner pay the fine……..

I took a few minutes to look up Ohio’s Animal Cruelty laws and this is what I found (applicable excerpts only):
(1) “Companion animal” means any animal that is kept inside a residential dwelling and any dog or cat regardless of where it is kept. “Companion animal” does not include livestock or any wild animal.
(C) No person who confines or who is the custodian or caretaker of a companion animal shall negligently
do any of the following:
(2) Deprive the companion animal of necessary sustenance, confine the companion animal without supplying it during the confinement with sufficient quantities of good, wholesome food and water, or impound or confine the companion animal without affording it, during the impoundment or confinement, with access to shelter from heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, or excessive direct sunlight, if it can reasonably be expected that the
companion animal would become sick or suffer in any other way as a result of or due to the deprivation, confinement, or impoundment or confinement in any of those specified manners.
In addition I have emailed the following Ohio government officials, with the exception of the Animal Shelter Director, whom I shall call tomorrow. I urge you all to do the same. Let’s bombard them with emails and phone calls, until they do the right thing!

Please contact Gary Nasal in the Miami County Prosecutors Office. Apparently it is he that is dragging his feet on this, and forced those tying to help to leave the birds in that house. Telephone Number: 937-440-5960 Please call and make your concerns known.

This is beyond words! All animals trust in us humans to provide. As someone commented before the people who knew of this & ignored are just as guilty if not more so! I am posting everywhere I can & hope all who I have posted will do the same. Prayers to the living & to those fids over the rainbow bridge! Thank you to the rescue league who first stepped in as well as the others. A gruesome ordeal for all!

OH, his breaks my heart. I’ve always wanted a Macaw and he is a man who has dozend and doen’t give a D#*# abut their wellfare. This man need MENTAL HELP. ZHe, Legally, should never be allowed pet owenership EVER. These Parrots need to be legally taken away and re-homed to loving Parrot lovers.
I’ve dontated $$$ to PAYPAL and will most likely send more.
Here is an IDEA…..have this guy arrested and jail him, in his HOME (Parrot jail), and allow, if he has any, family bring him food & water. OR, let the Politicians who are dragging their feed to do the honors. This guy is MAJOR sick. I PRAY that he is never allowed any kind of pet from here on out !!!

I am sooooo confused. A quote about the parrtos from whiotv.com said …….”The Miami County Humane Society has the authority to remove the birds, but an agent with that group told News Center 7 that they have to give the owner two weeks to bring the living conditions up to acceptable standards.”
Now a quote from whiotv.com about dogs and cats found in Huber Heights said….”Officials said they have removed 45 dogs and 85 cats. Authorities said they believe by the end of the day, they will have removed close to 131 animals from the house.”
Why are the dogs and cats removed immediately but the birds are not?! This is unfair and just pisses me off to no end while the birds suffer….

Hi Sadly those pictures are common all over the world. I have been doing rescues and rehomes for about 6 years now and it never seems to end. I am in Canada and I wish purchasing rules would become more restricted for owning companion animals. If people are not willing to learn what it takes to have an animal THRIVE in their care then they should not be able to buy them! Maybe rules might help stop the glut of unwanted or uncared for creatures. Dee Hart Hartsrus Aviary, a non breeding educational group

As of the writing here, no one seems to be aware that 14 of the Macaws are now at the Birds of Paradise Sanctuary and Rescue in Palmetto, Fl. Debby Huckaby is the driving force and owner of this fledgling rescue. These Macaws are now in a beautiful, large free flight aviary and are being rehabilitated. They are coming around very well and some are already interacting by flying down to shoulders for love and attention. Debby, with the help of volunteers, is making a huge difference for these and other birds from similar situations. She needs lots of help and definitely can use any monetary donations anyone can afford, no matter how small. She is in the process of getting the 501 designation so your donations will be deductible but anyone who can afford not to wait for this, you help will be much appreciated. If you can do anything at all, you can find her on Facebook under Debbie Huckaby. You can also contact me and I can put you in touch with her.
