Aaawwww! What a cutie! I love penguins. They are so adorable. I never realized they are this vocal – usually I only get to see them at Sea World behind thick glass. Thanks for sharing this video!

This is the cutest thing ever!!! My kids have watched this over and over! Do all Little penguins do this or is it just a cute quirk of Cookie’s?

Hello,
So I do research on humor and laughter and I would love to pick your brain on your experience with these “laughter” like sounds in penguins. Feel free to email me.

Got to see some of these guys down in Oamaru, New Zealand last month. I think the only animal I have seen that’s comparable on the cuteness scale is the pika. I was absolutely dying laughing when I saw a couple of these little penguins mating under a park bench near the harbor at Oamaru; I was laughing so hard I was crying. I wanted to take a pic, but figured the flash would interrupt their good time (the little penguins seem to come in from the ocean after dusk).

Watching about 10-15 of these guys climb up out of the water, stop, look around, and survey the area for a minute or two, then take a few more steps, stop and survey the area, then run like hell to their nests, falling and sliding on their stomachs every few steps, was really something to see at the Oamaru (New Zealand) blue penguin colony. For anyone who wants to make the trip to go see these guys come in by the hundreds there is an added bonus of seeing the shy yellow-eyed penguins a few miles away; they start coming in from the ocean a couple hours earlier than the little blue penguins do too, so you can see them both in a day.
Lots of other places besides Oamaru to see these magnificient creatures in New Zealand and Australia too though.

As the short version is on Facebook, it ended up shared on my news feed last night while I was in my little folding bed in Mum’s room at the hospital. I watched it 3 times I think and commented a thanks to my friend for sharing, then realised Dad and Nanna had snuck in to quietly take Mum with them. I think the forces of the universe worked to bring me your clip so I would be incredibly distracted for that moment of unbearable sadness. A fond family memory is going to Phillip Island a few times when visiting Nanna in Melbourne and Little Penguins have so much personality! Thank you for filming and sharing this incredibly adorable creature 🙂
