I’m back at the Cincinnati Zoo and settled into Steve and Carol’s Fabulous stone cottage. It reminds me of the house Jackson Pollock and his wife rented out in Long Island right before he became the “new rising artist” of the 20th century. I had an 18 hour day getting here…I had to get up [...]

I’m returning to the Cincinnati Zoo on Monday to work as a keeper in the Bird House. I’ll be there for three weeks doing what I do best: hosing down enclosures, cutting up fruit, feeding the King Penguins, artfully arranging food in a bucket for the fruit bats, and washing mountains of dishes. It’s a [...]

The sheer volume of work at the Bird House is overwhelming if you stop long enough to think about it. And if something odd comes up, and you have to cope with that along with your normal routine, well, you just deal with that as well as everything else. Just producing enough food for close [...]

This is Dave Oehler; Major Dude, Lead Cheese, and “Big Bird” at the Bird House. I believe his title is “Bird Curator”. But to me he is simply the “Major Dude”. When that came to mind, all I could think of was the Steely Dan song “Any Major Dude”. I’ve always liked that song and [...]
